Fear of hypoglycemia and sleep in children with type 1 diabetes and their parents

Fear of hypoglycemia and sleep in children with type 1 diabetes and their parents

Why did we undertake this study?

The daily management of type 1 diabetes is a 24/7 challenge for children and their families and may have a major negative impact on their sleep and quality of life. The aim of this study was to compare two different treatments with the same insulin pump on sleep and hypoglycemia fear in children with type 1 diabetes and their parent.

What is the specific question we wanted to answer?

Is there a difference in sleep duration and fear of hypoglycemia outcome between the analyzed two different technologies ? (insulin pump treatment and continuous glucose measurement without interaction between the devices and insulin pump connected to a sensor which combines alerts with an automated insulin suspension to prevent hypoglycemia)

What did we find?

According to the consensus statements, all participants in our study are considered to be sleep deprived (children more than their parents).

Total sleep duration, number of awakenings and number of nocturnal get-ups did not differ significantly for children or parents.
Neither daytime sleepiness nor hypoglycemia fear in children or parents differed significantly between the two different technologies.

What are the implications of our findings?

Lack of sleep and fear of hypoglycemia remain a major burden for patients with type 1 diabetes and their caregivers.
Whilst no significant differences between these two systems were found, sleep analysis and psycho-behavioral outcomes should be included in the evaluation of future new technologies.
